After more than a decade in full-time work, including five years in my most recent role, I reached a natural point where I felt ready for a change of pace. I wanted to rebalance my life a little slow things down, and reconnect with the creative spark that first brought me into post-production. My plan was simple, take the rest of the year off. This would give me enough time to sort out the life admin that builds up, set up the business properly, and ease myself back into freelance without the pressure of immediately taking on work.

But creativity has a funny way of disrupting even the best-laid plans.

Over the last few weeks, I found myself dipping back into the wider post-production community. I attended an event that was not exactly aimed at my corner of the industry, more for producers in the TV world, but it still opened my eyes. It reminded me how big, varied, and exciting this industry can be when you step outside the familiar rhythm of the same types of projects.

It made me miss it. Not the routine, but the craft. The variety. The energy of being around people who are passionate about making things.

So I have decided to jump back into freelancing a little earlier than intended.

For those who do not know me I work across editing, VFX, and motion graphics. Although I have been doing a lot of corporate work over the last decade, VFX has always been where I feel most at home creatively, and it is something I am excited to put more focus on again.

Returning to freelance after ten years feels both familiar and completely new. I am faster, more experienced, and much more grounded in the full production flow than I was back then. More importantly, I am stepping into it with a clearer sense of the work-life rhythm I want to build.

Looking ahead, I am aiming for a healthy balance: a couple of days each week immersed in creative work, and a few days spent building relationships, finding meaningful projects, and developing a sustainable client base. The networking side might be a challenge, or at least a muscle I need to rebuild, but I am genuinely energised by the possibilities.

One thing I am particularly excited about is returning to more film-focused work. Corporate projects have been great, and I have had opportunities to be creative that I am proud of, but film has always held a special kind of magic for me. It is where collaboration thrives and where craft can play a powerful role in shaping a story.

So here it is, a new chapter, a new pace, and a return to the kind of creative work that made me fall in love with this industry in the first place.

If you are looking for someone who cares about the details, the story, and the craft of post-production, I am back in the freelance world and would love to chat. Joe
